So I’ve been asked the following question. What’s the difference between rhythm and flow?
So these are related concepts, and although they are sometimes used interchangeably, in my mind they are not exactly the same. Rhythm refers to a pattern of sounds that’s arranged into a beat. For example, boop boop bop boop boop boop bop, pause, repeat.
That’s an example of a rhythm. There are lots of different potential rhythms.
Flow is more about the rhythm that you use when delivering your lyrics. So for example you can use the same lyrics, but a different rhythm and that will create a different flow. For me that’s where the distinction is, at least in rap music. Flow is more centered on your vocals and rhythm is more focused on the non-vocal aspects.
Hopefully that helps clear things up, again, they can and often are used as synonyms but I think they’re just a little different.
