In a recent string of cyberattacks, a Chinese hacking group known as Volt Typhoon has been targeting internet companies in both the United States and India by exploiting a critical flaw in software developed by a California-based startup, Versa Networks. This vulnerability, found in Versa’s software designed to manage network configurations, has left multiple companies exposed to significant risk.

According to security researchers at Lumen Technologies’ Black Lotus Labs, who were cited in a Bloomberg report, Volt Typhoon has successfully breached the defenses of four American companies, including internet service providers, and one Indian company. Although Versa Networks identified the flaw and released a patch in June 2023, not all companies acted quickly to apply the fix, leaving them vulnerable to attack. As a result, the hacking campaign is still believed to be active.
