Texas judge blocks Biden citizenship plan for migrant spouses
The program, called "Keeping Families Together," aimed to allow these individuals to stay in the country with their families while they worked through the lengthy process of applying for a green card. This was a part of President Biden's broader promise to bring a more compassionate approach to the U.S. immigration system, particularly when it comes to keeping families united.
The ruling came on a Monday when U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker sided with 16 states that had taken legal action against the Biden administration over this program. These states, all of which have Republican attorneys general, argued that the program overstepped the administration's legal authority and could encourage more illegal immigration. Judge Barker agreed that the concerns raised by these states were serious and deserved more thorough examination. As a result, he decided to temporarily block the program while the court takes a closer look at the arguments.
