Mask Making: Marvel's Proxima Midnight
Hello and welcome to our annual Countdown to Halloween!
The 2021 gang is lead by Marvel's Proxima Midnight from Thanos' Black Order.
Each year, we'll spend every Friday in October creating all kinds of masks that present unique challenged or extra spooky vibes.
With this mask, as with all of the upcoming Halloween masks, you can choose between using your own custom template based on the tutorial I already put up for you, or use a bought one from a craft store or the internet. Since I like using the white mask you see in the video – even though I often have to fix the missing space on the top of the forehead – I'll be using mostly these, but I made sure to film a bit of extra content to include instructions for your own template.
I've never made a mask with attached hair before, so that was obviously the greatest challenge about this built. Luckily I'm subscribed to some very cool creative minds from the doll customizing community, and they got great techniques around attaching hair.
I combined a few things I saw and decided to make hair wefts from the wig I got online, hot glue those in place on the head and then carefully handmake the hairline with loose hair.
You might wonder, why did I even attach the hair directly to the mask?
First of all, I personally don't enjoy wearing wigs. It's stuffy and often uncomfortably hot for me, and my hair is too straight to even hold bobby pins, so I'm dealing with a lot of adjusting throughout any given cosplay day.
Second of all, I wanted to make a convincing hairline, that holds onto the forehead itself.
And last but not least, since it's a very cheap wig, it didn't even fit my head or the styrofoam heads I have lol
With this project I also learned how massively I can underestimate a task :D
I thought I'd be good to go within a day or two putting on the hair, but in the end it took me a full week. I thought making the wefts was super easy and ended up losing a lot of hair because I used too much hair per weft and it just fell right out. I was convinced I had enough wefts with just the long hair, but ended up having to fluff up the middle of the head with some shorter hairs.
So all in all working with hair was a very steep learning curve, but in the end I'm quite satisfied with the outcome.
There is another mask with hair attached in the ideas folder, but I will allow myself some hair-free time for the rest of the year before tackling this one lol
