Three Lakes in Three Miles at Mammoth Lakes, CA
The last stop for our summer road trip in the Sierra was at the Coldwater Campground in the Inyo National Forest, Mammoth Lakes area. We stayed there for two nights but unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy the our one full day there as much as we wish because I accidentally locked the keys inside the car and where we were didn't have phone service so getting a locksmith was a whole ordeal. Fortunately though, the morning before checking out, I was able to salvage our time at Mammoth Lakes with a short little hike where I saw three alpine lakes; Arrowhead Lake, Skelton Lake, and Emerald Lake.
Skelton Lake was the biggest and the main lake I went to go see and that is where I took a refreshing dip into the lake. If I had more time I would have liked to hike up to Duck Lake Pass which is a little ways further up the mountain, up there you can connect with other wilderness trails including the John Muir Trail. I would really love to return to this area for a few nights in the backcountry.
When we originally planned our stay at Mammoth it was mostly just to have a stopover on our way home from Yosemite National Park but after a couple days there it turned out to be one of my favorite places we have ever visited.
