Getting AIS data from AISSTREAM.IO via secured Websockets (wss) with Node-NED
I was searching for AIS data via APIs and usually you will find AISHub or MarineTraffic. However, to get data you need to offer an own AIS stream (AISHub) or you have to pay for data requests (MarineTraffic).
But this time I came across AISSTREAM.IO - they offer a websocket based API for free. You need an API key which you can get using a GITHub account free of charge.
So - of course we have to check this out!
We will use Node-RED to build up a websocket connection, send our API key and our areas we want to get data for and receive JSON AIS based NMEA data. Cool!
