Alfred Hitchcock once said that drama is life with the dull bits cut out.
Everything touched by the camera becomes more powerful, intense and somewhat real. The boring parts of life are transfigured in cinema. Because, as soon as you film them they are no longer boring. Anything is stylized when you put a camera in front of it. If you are looking for realism you can certainly look to Italian neo realism, but there’s a Taiwanese director who made it better: Edward Yang.
