Judder in your steering wheel? Does this quick fix I found on YouTube actually work?
I was actually considering rushing out and buying another car recently – just so I didn’t have to fix the bushings and or suspension on my 2010 Subaru Legacy All Wheel Drive estate! So I did this fix that I found on Youtube and wondered would it actually work? I’m happy to tell you it did work and this video tells you what to do and how I saved myself a lot of money!! I’m not normally one to go for quick fixes and things that seem to good to be true…but I couldn’t get my car booked into a garage running up to Christmas.
So a few weeks ago I noticed excessive wear on the outside of my both my front tyres. I read that this can be just from under inflation. I checked the tyre pressures which indeed were a little low – 1.9 ish compared to the specified 23-25 bar. At this point I hadn’t noticed any issues with the steering. After a couple of weeks and hitting a couple of pot holes in our wonderful UK roads I think the steering issue became noticeable.
I then realised that my cars MOT was up for renewal and thought I’d get them to have a look while doing it’s MOT inspection. To my surprise it did actually pass it’s MOT and just had advisories on the suspension and more issues on the back suspension not the front which was not what I was expecting considering the judder at the front wheels. I was advised that a wheel alignment (also known as tracking) might sort out the issue.
D riving it away from the MOT center the judder was still there and by this point quite pronounced. I luckily got a wheel alignment booked in right away at another tyre place. After the wheel alignment there was no reduction in the judder – which was extremely disappointing. I then resorted to searching YouTube for an answer as I couldn’t book it into a garage before Christmas!
I found a video by Scotty Kilmer “How to Fix Wobbly Steering Wheel in Your Car”. The fix is so easy it seemed to good to be true…. but sure enough- for the moment it’s fixed my problem. So this video shows you step by step how to swap your tyres front to back and possibly easily stop the judder in your steering wheel and maybe like me save you a lot of money by not having to fix your suspension or buy a new car to avoid that expense.
First you get your wheel locking nut key out so you can unlock your wheel locking nuts!
you put things on the opposite tyres to stop the car from moving when you are lifting it
You loosen off the nuts and locking nut with a breaker bar or whatever you have that has a large amount of leverage
Once the nuts are hand tight only you can raise the car
undo all nuts on that side of the car and remove the wheels
swap them front to back
tighten the nuts to easy hand tight with a normal spanner or ratchet.
lower the car
use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts on the car to the specified force (usually found in the car manual or on the internet)
Another thing you should probably do while you have the front tyres off is check your suspension at the front for any broken or severely worn parts.
