I've been watching the VR tech ever since the Oculus Rift DK1 came out - which I owned. That experience was good enough to see the potential and understand VR will be a game-changer for sim racing. However the optics and resolution was nowhere near what it would need to be to take the place of a 2D monitor. I owned both the DK1 and DK2, as well as the Oculus Go. The Oculus Go did surprisingly well actually - only limited by slightly underwhelming resolution, battery life, and a processor that simply was punished by heat build-up when sim racing.
Cut to 2020 and we're getting so close to VR being THE way to experience sim racing. I purchased an HP Reverb G2, and while the resolution and clarity were amazing, the hardware/software integration was problematic. So I purchased an Oculus Quest 2 to try and I've been pleasantly surprised (I still think we're a generation or two away from the point where it becomes a no-brainer). But the headset is usable and effective. The link cable is brilliant. Hand gestures work well. And the double tap for the pass-through IR camera is a fantastic feature. In addition, I find Oculus to still be miles ahead of the competitors when it comes to software and stability.
In order to get to where we ultimately need to be, there's work to be done on both the CPU and GPU fronts. Again, a generation or two before we'll get crisp, stereoscopic images running at high frequency with the best eye candy bits turned on. I can't wait!
In the meantime, this is simply a screen test to see how VR looks on YouTube with my graphics package. IMO, the biggest issue with VR streaming is you're still streaming in 2D, where as depth perception in 3D is VR's biggest advantage in sim racing.
