Star Wars is a film franchise whose history began with the 1977 film Star Wars. The creator of Star Wars is screenwriter, producer, and director George Lucas. In 2012, Lucas sold his company Lucasfilm, along with the rights to Star Wars, to the Walt Disney Company.
At its core, Star Wars consists of three film trilogies: the original trilogy, which, in addition to Star Wars (now titled A New Hope), includes The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); The prequel trilogy, set before the original trilogy, consists of the films The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005); and the sequel trilogy comprises The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Star Wars is categorized as a space opera and a heroic epic, among other genres. The films are set in a fictional universe of the distant past and deal with the ongoing struggle between good and evil—two sides represented by the light and dark sides of the Force. The first two trilogies essentially tell the story of the fall of the Galactic Republic, the rise of the Galactic Empire, and the successful revolution against the Empire by the former leaders of the Republic. The Star Wars saga drew inspiration from popular culture, including works by director Akira Kurosawa, author Isaac Asimov, and the mythology of Joseph Campbell, particularly his concept of the hero's journey.
Based on box office receipts, which have totaled over $10.3 billion to date, the Star Wars saga is the second highest-grossing film franchise in history after the Marvel Cinematic Universe (both produced by The Walt Disney Company). The Star Wars franchise also includes numerous television series, more than 250 novels, comics, toys, and countless other merchandising products. As of 2018, sales of Star Wars merchandise had generated approximately $70 billion. This makes Star Wars the most successful film merchandising franchise in the world and earns it a place in the Guinness World Records. The films have also received numerous awards, including ten Academy Awards.
The Star Wars franchise also boasts ten Oscars. In addition to the films of the three Skywalker trilogies, two spin-offs, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 2016) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 2018), were released in theaters. A whole conglomerate of new films and series was announced at the Disney Investor Day 2020.[1] Disney's in-house streaming service, Disney+, has been continuously releasing new series since 2019, including The Mandalorian (since 2019), the final season of The Clone Wars (2020), Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021–2024), Star Wars: Visions of the West (since 2021), The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), Tales of the Jedi / Tales of the Empire (since 2022), Andor (since 2022), Ahsoka (since 2023), and The Acolyte (since 2024). Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is a future series project in development. Disney confirmed the release of new films for 2025 and 2027, but emphasized that it would primarily focus on producing series for its streaming service Disney+ for the time being.[2][3][4]
Since April 2023, it has been known that Lucasfilm and Disney are developing three new Star Wars feature films. James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy have been signed on to direct one film each. Mangold's film is intended to be a biblical epic in the style of The Ten Commandments (1956) and will tell the origin story of the Jedi Order. Obaid-Chinoy's film will bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker from the sequel trilogy and show how she rebuilds the Jedi Order after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the last installment of the original nine films. Filoni's film, on the other hand, is intended to serve as the conclusion to the Star Wars television series universe, consisting of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.[5] The film's production was announced as the first of the announced projects, titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, and is scheduled to begin in 2024.
