How to Make Time to Create
Identifying the Right Moments
"I don't have time," that's what we often say! However, it is possible to carve out time for your creativity, even on the busiest days. The key is organization and prioritization. First, identify the times of day when you could incorporate a creative activity. Early in the morning before the house wakes up, during your lunch break, or in the evening after dinner. Every free moment can be an opportunity. Remember that expressing your passion is a priority. Housework can wait (it's so much less fulfilling than a personal activity).
Organizational Techniques
Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to structure your time: 25 minutes of focused work followed by 5 minutes of creative break. You'll be surprised how much you can accomplish in such a short time! Another technique is "time blocking," which involves reserving specific time slots in your calendar for creative activities. Stick to them as if they were important appointments.
Schedule your creative sessions like appointments. Write them down in your calendar and stick to them. By blocking out these times in advance, you're more likely to respect them and not let them be taken over by other tasks.
Reduce screen time
According to the French National Digital Observatory, we spend about 5 hours a day on screens (for adults). That's enormous! Is it productive time? Necessary? Interesting? Not really, no, at least not entirely. Perhaps this is also one of the keys to finding more time. We can replace one hour of screen time with one hour of creativity, and we'll certainly see a positive result very quickly in our lives.
Create a conducive environment
Minimize distractions by creating a space dedicated to your creativity. A corner of the living room, a table in the bedroom, it doesn't matter. What matters is that this place becomes your creative sanctuary, a place where you can immerse yourself in your passion without being disturbed. Having an organized and pleasant space can greatly improve your ability to concentrate and be productive. Make sure this space is comfortable and well-lit. Keep all your creative tools within easy reach to avoid wasting time searching for them. This could be a large box with everything in it. An inspiring environment stimulates creativity.
What activities lend themselves well to a creative routine?
Drawing and painting
Some creative activities are particularly easy to integrate into a daily routine. Drawing, for example, requires only a few simple tools and can be done in short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes. Keep a sketchbook and pencils handy, and draw whenever you have a free moment. Painting, too, can be done quite easily if you are well-organized.
Drawing and painting are excellent ways to relax and express your emotions. You can start with simple sketches and progress to more complex projects over time.
Creative journal
Personally, I've recently started keeping a creative journal. I actually have several mediums; I combine drawing, painting, and especially mixed media and art therapy. I love this expressiveness, which allows me to fulfill all my creative desires in relatively small and "storeable" formats, because my crafting and DIY activities were taking up too much space…
Crafting and DIY Projects
Crafting and DIY projects are fantastic ways to nurture your creativity while making useful or decorative objects. Take a few minutes each day to work on a DIY project. Little by little, you'll see your creation take shape, which is incredibly rewarding.
DIY projects can be as simple or complex as you like. Whether it's creating jewelry, decorating your home, or making personalized gifts, crafting offers a multitude of possibilities to express your creativity.
