GHB - One Critical Minute [1CM]
In this One Critical Minute we focus on GHB.
Gammahydroxybuteric acid, or GHB, is a neurotransitter that acts on the GABA-B receptor. It thus has a sedative effect and causes a sedative-hypnotic toxidrome. In low doses it causes a euphoric but relaxed mood, and an enhanced drive. In larger doses it could cause loss of consciousness. As mentioned in the sedative toxidrome video, watch out for respiratory depression, bradycardia and hypothermia. Note that home-made GHB contains an enormous amount of sodium. Chronic users will therefore drink a lot of fluids (usually beer though), so keep in mind that when they lose their ability to drink (i.e. when they lose consciousness), they could develop severe hypernatremia. GHB is liquid and taken orally. The onset of effects is 10 to 30 minutes. As it's very hard to titrate GHB based on its effect, people frequently overdose on this drug. Effects last for about 30 minutes to a few hours.
GHB is a strong sedative, which in low doses causes a relaxed mood and an enhanced drive. It is known by the public as the "date r*pe drug". As it is hard to titrate this drug, people frequently overdose. In recreational users, these people will usually just sleep it off, while we keep them on the monitor. For chronic users, watch out for severe withdrawal symptoms and hypernatremia.
