Rupiculous laelias are on of my many nemesis when it comes to favorite orchids. I have approx. 33 rupicolous laelias which are all growing well, and to some degree are thriving. Laelia regentii belongs to the category of rupicolous laelias that I deem, the daisies of the orchid world. These white blooms are tiny, they may not look like much, but the charm is in the detail. For the most part, the blooms on rupicolous laelias sparkle. The lip on rupicolous laelias are charmingly curled and ruffled at the edges. These miniature orchids are cold hardy down to 40ºF / 4ºC and lower in some cases, but mine only get exposed to 41ºF / 5ºC during the cold winter nights which hit during the months of January - February. Other than that, my rupicolous laelias tolerate temperatures up to 104ºF / 40ºC but, in those extremes, I keep them in the bright shade to protect them from burning. While they live on exposed rocky outcrops in Minas Gerais, Brazil, they constantly have some form of cool breeze to buffer against the full sun. In my environment, the wind does not cool them down because it matches the ambient temperature, for that reason, they are in bright shade.
