I´m Mari Carmen again!
In this lesson number 2 I´m going to talk about phrasal verbs.
My students are always complaining about phrasal verbs:
-'How can I learn them?'
And they' re right!
I'm not going to lie: they´re tough!
GO OUT= salir LOOK FOR = buscar WAKE UP = despertarse
STAND UP = ponerse de pié, etc.
These are all really common phrasal verbs!
They are used in spoken and written English , especially in informal situations.
I'm sure you already know some of them but, the phrasal verbs you will need to know at B2, will be harder than these because their meaning will be less obvious.
Now, Let's get our first in-depth look at PHRASAL VERBS.
What are phrasal verbs?
A phrasal verb is a combination of a VERB and a PARTICLE.
GO=ir, WRITE=escribir, READ=leer, LISTEN=escuchar, etc. are VERBS.
And the PARTICLES are PREPOSITIONS and ADVERBS.
For instance, OUT, IN, ON, UP, DOWN, BY, etc. are some of the most common particles.
What makes them fun but confusing and tricky is the fact that a phrasal verb has a meaning, which is different from that of the original verb.
Let´s see an example:
the verb GIVE means DAR
but
the phrasal verb GIVE UP means abandonar,rendirse
Now, Let's compare the meaning of these two sentences:
-' Can you GIVE me that book over there, please?'
(-'¿Puedes darme aquel libro que está allí, por favor?'
Whereas
-' Joe GAVE UP studying Chinese because it was too difficult'
(Joe dejó de estudiar chino porque lo encontró demasiado difícil)
Finally, as I know it must be hard for you to remember them, here are some recommendations that may help you in your learning process:
One- study them gradually, in sets of 5 every time.
Two- write sentences, which include the phrasal verb you have already studied. It will help you to understand its meaning and how to use it.
Three- in your notebook, organize them:
a. By topic: for example, phrasal verbs about fashion and clothes
(dress up, put on, take off, etc.)
b. By the original verb: for instance, phrasal verbs with the verb GO
(go out, go away, go up, etc.)
c.By particle: for example, phrasal verbs with the particle DOWN
(turn down, calm down, come down, etc.)
Four- For me this is the most important recommendation!!!!!
Force yourself to use the phrasal verbs that you already know whenever you speak!!!
