VMware has taken the market by storm.
By 2012, over 85 percent of datacenters will have some form of virtualization.
VMware allows you to virtualize your servers into one physical ESX box plus it drives up server utilization.
Challenges of VMware for backup:
1. No free processes for backup.
2. Loosing one ESX virtual server is more catastrophic than loosing just one physical server host in a storage environment.
3. Shrinking backup windows
4. Growing datasets
Methods used to backup data in a VMware infrastructure:
1. Install backup agent in each VM machine. Same approach as backup a physical server.
Advantages:
a. Nothing changes from a backup perspective
b. Full backups, incremental backups, single file restores
Disadvantages:
a. When backup VM machine in a production environment, impacts all VM machines on that server.
b. Maintain and upgrade VM machine backup agents.
c. Not able to do full backup-restore.
