VMware Consolidated Backup is the 3rd approach to data protection for VMware.
The VCV Proxy Server can be configured to access same datasets as the ESX Servers. Then backup data is offloaded from ESX Servers onto the VCV Proxy Server media: tape or disk.
Advantages of this approach:
1. Offload workload from ESX Servers
2. Full and incremental backups
3. Single file restores
Disadvantages:
1. Increased backup licensing costs
2. Increased storage capacity costs
3. Temporary staging area required
4. Can require 10 or more VCV Proxy Servers
