The city is named after St. Nicholas - the patron saint of sailors. It was on St. Nicholas Day that the troops of the Russian Empire conquered the Turkish fortress of Ochakiv in 1788. The following year, they began to build a city on Ingula, which they decided to name in honor of a revered Christian saint. Mykolayiv is a city of ships. The first frigate built here was called "Saint Nicholas". Nikolaev has some own records. There is the Ingulsky Bridge here - today it is already reconstructed and modern. This is the first bridge in Nikolaev, located at the confluence of the rivers Ingul and Southern Bug. The bridge is a drawbridge, and its lifting part is the largest in Europe.
