Climate change, energy transition, scarcity of resources, loss of species, personal health. The world is facing enormous challenges, which politics, the economy, and society will have to face. The decisions we take today will impact our future. And these decisions must be based on facts. These facts are at the very core of what the 4RI, the 4 research institutes of the ETH domain, do, day after day. They explore questions like: How do we shape our future energy system? How do we produce and store environmentally friendly electricity? How do we synthesize alternative fuels? How do we use our water resources? How do we build (and maintain) our infrastructure? Which innovations support and maintain our health in an increasingly aging society? And how can all this be reconciled with an environment that is entirely intact? These major challenges of our times are all interconnected.
