Split or Full-Body Workout
Markus Rühl offers tips on the correct training structure.
Beginners complete a full-body workout. This means that all muscle groups are trained in each training session. Usually, one exercise per muscle is sufficient. After all, the body needs to get used to the new training load.
Whether to use a split workout should primarily depend on the training frequency. If you train twice a week, a 2-split workout would be a good idea. On the first training day, for example, you would focus on chest, shoulders, triceps, and abs, and on the second day, legs, back, and biceps. Each muscle is then trained with two to three exercises.
If you train three times a week, a 3-split workout would be suitable. On the first training day, for example, you would focus on chest, shoulders, and biceps, on the second day, legs, abs, and lower back, and on the third day, the upper back, neck, and triceps. Large muscle groups can be worked with up to four exercises.
However, a split workout only makes sense if you actually train several times a week. If you only go to the gym once a week, you should stick to a full-body workout. After all, every muscle should be challenged at least once a week.
