While lots of people you know look forward to the 4th of July - BBQ, going to the lake, cold beverages and fun, you dread it. Your dog, your best buddy is so terrified of fireworks it puts a damper on the whole day. You've tried so many different things with limited luck. Don't despair, we've got some tips, hints and advice to help you make it thru the 4th with your nerves and your dog's mostly intact.
Your dog may usually be a confident, self-assured dog, but fireworks turn them to a whimpering puddle of sadness. Just as certain triggers cause terror in people (spiders, snakes, heights), our dogs also have fear triggers. Thunder, fireworks or being alone are all common triggers for our dogs. Fireworks are probably #1.
First, what the heck is it about fireworks that scares our dogs so much?
1) The noise comes suddenly and they are not prepared
2) The loud noise may actually hurt their sensitive ears
3) They don't know if the fireworks will ever end
4) They smell funny to dogs
5) There is the accompanying whooping and hollering
We've got LOTS of tips and hints on how to survive the day. Keeping expectations real - Your dog will probably never enjoy the fireworks. But if they can make it thru the day less stressed and not drooling and damaging property or injuring themselves, then that is a win in my book.
