It was written by Hope Sandoval. David Roback was the composer and producer. "Fade Into You" reached number 3 in 1994 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart, and it's the only single of Mazzy Star that made it into the Billboard Hot 100, ending up at number 44. International success soon followed reaching number 48 in the UK and number 3 in Iceland.

Fade Into You is about unrequited love. The writer, Hope Sandoval is endeavouring to make a connection on a soul level to the object of her affection.
One of the top performing songs of the 90's Mazzy Star hit platinum status with it resulting in over a million album sales. The success of Mazzy Star thrust the group into a place where they both felt uncomfortable..that being in the spotlight! Both Sandoval and Roback never enjoyed interviews and, Sandoval refused to discuss the lyrics of the song. The only remark she made in 2013 was that she thought it was a good song.

Roback told the press that the groups main focus was not for fame or the glory of having fans, but mainly concerned about the "internal process" as he put it. He was quoted as saying this about the group,"The outside world is really not on our minds, in so far as the music is concerned. We're really doing it in our own world for ourselves. We're engaged in the stories of each individual song. It is it's own world unto itself." He also told the times in 1993 that
“You have to leave something to people’s imagination, so they feel they can participate. Music is music. We don’t want to be part of that over-determination. We feel you should be able to shut your eyes and listen to it.”
David Roback passed away in 2020.

Both Sandoval and Roback came up with the lyrics and music of the song in just one day! They never intended on writing a hit song, they just wanted to write a song. They had a melody and a feeling which they followed to what became the song, "Fade Into You."
Two music videos were made in 1993 and 1994 respectively.
