“Come Together” is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon-McCartney. The song is the opening track on the band’s 1969 album “Abbey Road” and was also released as a double A-side single with “Something”. The song reached the top of the charts in the US and Australia but peaked at no.4 in the United Kingdom.
John Lennon found inspiration for the song from various sources ie the opening line “here come old flat-top' came from an old Chuck Berry single “You Can’t Catch Me” though Paul suggested slowing it’s pace to reduce the similarity. The initial inspiration of the song was in response to a request by Timothy Leary for a campaign song to be used in Leary’s run for governor of California. However the campaign ended when Leary was imprisoned for cannabis possession allowing Lennon to record the song with the Beatles,
The lyrics have been referenced by John Lennon as being ‘gobbledygook’ …. his exact words were “I don’t know, it was a nonsense song, it was just a funky song that’s all”. “It’s one of those songs which has a simple beat but the bass line is so interesting that it intrigues me still; it’s a moody song …. it’s not really about anything, it’s just a mood and a feeling”.
The song has been covered by several other artists including Ike & Tina Turner, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Michael Jackson.
