HISTORY OF JENNIFER RUSH - Power of Love
Originally recorded in 1984 in the dulcet yet powerful voice of Jennifer Rush for her eponymous album, 'The Power of Love' has over the years been covered by several eminent artists and bands, including Celine Dion, Laura Branigan, and Air Supply. It has also been translated into numerous languages. The song broke all records and topped charts in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and numerous European countries. As a matter of fact, it also became the best-selling song of the year in the United Kingdom in 1985 and in 1986, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson chose The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush for their first dance as a married couple.
It all started in the 1980s when Jennifer, originally from New York, decided to spend some years in Germany. It was when she was living in the country that she signed a record deal with CBS Germany. The song 'Power of Love', which Rush co-wrote with Mary Susan Applegate, a poet/lyricist, was released as part of this deal in 1984 in West Germany. Jennifer had written the song for her then-boyfriend Steven Engebretson, a Harvard Graduate. It began climbing the charts as soon as it was released.
Paul Russel, the then CBS Records London Chief, heard Jennifer singing the song at an event in Hawai and decided to release it in the United Kingdom. However, it is believed that the general consensus at CBS was that the song was too European for the American taste and thus, its release in the U.S. was withheld until 1986. On its release, the song reached 57 on Billboard Hot 100 but failed to pick up from there.
The song beautifully captures the heart of a woman who was afraid to love until she found a man who she began to love with all her heart. It also conveys the idea that when love is all-consuming and pure, it may seem frightful, but it also gives lovers the power and strength to take the plunge. Love can make people calmer and secure -- for Jennifer, her home is her lover's arms where she feels safe from the world outside. When she feels frightened, the simple sound of her lover's heartbeat is enough to bring her peace. Simple things, such as watching her lover sleep, bring her joy. These small changes make Jennifer realize how willing she is to do everything it takes to make her man happy and keep their relationship alive.
The Power of Love is a simple song sang most beautifully that perhaps became such a popular hit because at the core of it are emotions that make love as beautiful as it is believed to be -- dedication, sacrifice, loyalty, purity and most importantly, the will to go all out.
