Here's an overview of working with layers in Photoshop:
1. Creating Layers:
To create a new layer, go to the "Layers" panel (usually found on the right side of the interface) and click on the "Create a New Layer" button (it looks like a square with a folded corner) at the bottom of the panel. Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+Shift+N" (Windows) or "Cmd+Shift+N" (Mac).
2. Layer Stacking Order:
The stacking order of layers determines how they are displayed on the canvas. The layer at the top of the stack will be the frontmost, while the layer at the bottom will be the rearmost. To change the stacking order, drag and drop the layers in the "Layers" panel or use the "Bring to Front" or "Send to Back" options.
3. Opacity and Fill:
Adjusting the opacity of a layer will control its transparency. You can find the opacity slider at the top of the "Layers" panel. Drag the slider to adjust the opacity, allowing you to blend layers together. For more control over the content's transparency, use the "Fill" option, which affects only the content, not layer styles.
4. Layer Visibility:
The eye icon next to each layer in the "Layers" panel controls the visibility of that layer. Clicking the eye icon toggles the visibility on and off, allowing you to see or hide specific layers on the canvas.
5. Layer Locking:
Use the various lock icons in the "Layers" panel to prevent accidental edits on certain aspects of a layer. For example, you can lock the transparency, image pixels, or position of a layer.
6. Layer Groups:
Organize your layers by creating layer groups. To create a group, select multiple layers and click the "New Group" icon at the bottom of the "Layers" panel. Grouping layers helps keep your workspace tidy and allows you to apply effects or adjustments to multiple layers simultaneously.
7. Blending Modes:
Blending modes control how a layer interacts with the layers beneath it. Experiment with different blending modes to achieve various creative effects.
8. Layer Masks:
Layer masks enable you to selectively show or hide parts of a layer without permanently erasing any content. Use the layer mask icon at the bottom of the "Layers" panel to add a mask to a layer.
9. Smart Objects:
Convert layers to smart objects to preserve the original image quality and enable non-destructive transformations and adjustments.
