Although time as we know it moves inexorably forward, the concept that time could also flow backward has long captured the attention of human imagination. But according to physics principles and our observations of the cosmos, the arrow of time is clearly pointing forward. The Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that entropy, or disorder, tends to rise over time, captures this idea. It explains why ice cubes melt in a warm environment and why cracked eggs don't reassemble themselves. This fundamental idea highlights the fact that time cannot go backward.
The idea of causality and the arrow of time go hand in hand. Reversing time would interfere with the causality that links events in the cosmos in a chain of cause and effect. We would see effects coming before their causes if time could go backwards, which would create paradoxes and logical inconsistencies. This issue is famously illustrated by the "grandfather paradox": if time travel were possible, you would go back in time and stop your own grandpa from meeting your grandmother, resulting in a scenario where you would not have been born. These contradictions show how unrealistic and inconsistent time travel in the other direction is.
In addition, there is no way to reverse time according to our understanding of the fundamental rules of physics, including Einstein's theory of relativity. Time travels at different speeds and in different gravitational environments, as shown by the relativity-predicted effect of time dilation, yet it still advances inexorably. Even while it is still a fascinating concept for science fiction, time travel is not possible in reality due to the limitations placed on it by our current understanding of the universe.
