Secluded in his room, Luke felt his D.D.D. vibrate, signalling a new message. Opening the device, he discovered an update from Lilith. His confusion deepened as he read the message aloud, “Come over to the House of Lamentation.”
Despite the lack of context, Luke determined that her discovery must be severely important. Luke quickly gathered his items to head out, not daring to be late… again. With haste, he left his room, only to find himself face-to-face with Simeon, an unexpected encounter that left a knot in his stomach. The sight of his former friend stirred a mix of emotions within Luke.
Simeon's gentle tone, filled with genuine concern, inquired, “Luke, where are you heading off to?”
Luke clenched his jaw, fighting back the desire to answer Simeon's question. He wanted to flee, but Simeon was standing in his path, preventing him from doing so. A bitter taste filled his mouth as he chewed the inside of his cheek, remaining steadfast in his silence.
Simeon, observant, noted the distress etched on Luke's face. Concern laced his voice as he gently spoke, “Don’t hurt yourself, Luke...”
Luke's voice, laced with annoyance, muttered a request to Simeon, “Can you move?”
The frustration in his tone was obvious. Simeon, taken aback, shifted awkwardly, clearly uncomfortable with the harshness in Luke's words.
“I'm your friend, Luke..” Simeon murmured tenderly, his voice laced with a tinge of hurt. “I...”
Simeon trailed off, his own vulnerability briefly surfacing, before he caught himself and continued, “I was just wondering where you were going. Just in case you get lost... or something happened.”
Luke's movements halted, and a bitter smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. The word ‘friend’ lingered in the air, weighed down by the complexities of their strained relationship.
“I don't have any friends,” Luke's retort cut through the room, his words laced with anger and hurt. He snapped, his voice filled with bitterness. “You are not my friend. Stop acting like you f*cking care. If you were truly my friend, you wouldn't have agreed to sacrifice MC!”
The pain visibly creased Simeon's face as Luke's words echoed in the space between them. The soft smile that had graced his lips was now replaced by a frown, a reflection of his wounded feelings. He fidgeted, rubbing his arm awkwardly as the weight of Luke's anger hung thick in the air.
Luke, his outburst subsiding, muttered through gritted teeth, “Can you move now?”
The tension around him had grown uncomfortably thick, and he desperately longed for Simeon to step aside so he could be on his way.
Simeon reluctantly stepped aside, allowing Luke to briskly pass by him. As the door closed behind Luke, the sound of silence enveloped Simeon, leaving him standing there, lost in his thoughts. No words could adequately defend himself from the sting of Luke's words, leaving him feeling hollow and hurt. The air around him seemed to still as he remained frozen in place, trying to process the weight of what just happened.
