William Smallwood (1732 - Feb. 14, 1792) was an American planter, soldier and politicia...oops wrong guy.
The William Smallwood (Dec. 31, 1831 - Aug. 6, 1897) that composed this piece was an English composer, writer, and arranger of numerous pianoforte pieces of world-wide popularity, according to his obituary. I think they might've fluffed up his obituary a bit with the "world-wide popularity" statement, but nonetheless, this piece is quite nice.
I thought this back-handed compliment from his obituary was kinda funny:
"Though unambitious, both in melody and harmony his pianoforte compositions are pure in style, and it may be truly said that they point to higher things, and show the way."
