The Bible and Michelangelo. An Artist Reads the Bible – Lecture Four
On January 26, the Pokrovskie Vorota Cultural Center hosted Natalia Borovskaya's fourth lecture in the "An Artist Reads the Bible" series. This time, the lecture focused on the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo.

When discussing Michelangelo's frescoes, it's impossible not to touch on their connection with the frescoes on the northern and southern walls depicting scenes from the Book of Exodus and the Gospel, painted by leading 15th-century artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, and Pietro Perugino.
The focus, of course, was his unique work in the Sistine Chapel, where he explored key themes from the Book of Genesis and the theme of the Last Judgment.
Since the emergence of Christianity, biblical stories have become a subject of reflection and creativity. The artist has developed a personal dialogue with the biblical text itself and with its understanding by church tradition. The lectures in the "An Artist Reads the Bible" series will highlight works by major masters of the Italian Renaissance, paintings on biblical themes by Rembrandt, and 19th-century Russian artists such as Alexander Ivanov, Nikolai Ge, and Vasily Polenov.
Natalia Borovskaya, PhD in Art History, is a professor in the Department of General History at the I. Glazunov Academy of Fine Arts.
