How does the breath we exhale become wood and leaves and stalks? I'd not given a lot of though carbon dioxide, carbon fixation,r the rubisco enzyme or any of the other wacky aspects of photosynthesis. But during a conversation with beloved sibling Professor Nicholas Gross of physics lecturer @Boston University, he asked, "Where do you think the mass of trees comes from?" He, knew more than me but then recommended I interview his colleague, biologist Dr. Kathryn Spilios, also of Boston U. What followed was a fun, funny exploration of the science of what it really takes to be a human or any other carbon-based life form. BTW, I'm a sciency optimist and the Artist in Residence for the Chicago Council for Science and Technology!
