my name is jayme shimooka and i'm the
owner and artistic director of studio
dansu here in madison wisconsin
right now we are working on our
september classical ballet and we this
year we chose firebird firebird is one
of those ballets that's based on a very
old folklore story out of russia so
it is not only a reimagining from the
folklore to a ballet but in its
different
variations that have been performed
different companies have reimagined it
in different ways sometimes the villain
is seen as
very animalistic and very very evil
other times
i've seen him portrayed more as just
like an energy or power
my name is miss peg
or peggy whichever you prefer
i have been working with studio dansu in
their fall productions this is my third
time around
and as an adult i get to do wonderful
fun things like i get to be villains or
i get to be crazy
fairy godmothers or i get to be crazy
old wizards
this year i'm called shy i am a russian
demon sort of character i'm a bad guy
again between
miss pegg and myself we have talked
about where we wanted to go with the
villain and whether or not he she it
was something that had
inherent power or if it was something
that there was a magical token that it
derived its power from so we
kind of pitched some different ideas
back and forth so we've been working on
the premise that coal shy
is someone who
gets their power
from
having people
underneath them having underlings and so
you'll see me with lots of little
creatures who are my
underlings and i get my power from them
and at the same time i tell them to go
behave
and we work from that premise in this
show rather than from from me being an
evil evil demon so almost similar to
ursula from little mermaid
where she was collecting the voices in
the souls and that's where she got all
her power from something similar to that
is where we went with the villain here
