Technically Grim didn’t come up with the stairs scene himself, but because the turtle idea was his, Walt gave him the $50 bonus. Some gags were worth more than others, ranging from about $5-50 if they were used in the final feature. The bonus was incentive for the animators to work quickly and come up with amusing action that helped move the plot along.
“We always had one in our pants pocket when we were kids, a frog or a turtle or something. So I made a lot of sketches of turtles doing different things, and they made a lot of use of it… I don’t remember what I drew, but they wrote it in right into the story and used him for a scrub board. He was still going up the stairs when they started running down and he toppled over and skidded out of the house.” - Grim Natwick
This story came from an obscure interview with Grim Natwick conducted by David Johnson about the animator’s career and work on Snow White.
