In this presentation, we will discuss our progress in developing and operating (for the past four semesters) a tapeout-centric course at Carnegie Mellon University to teach students about the open-source EDA landscape and give them hands-on experience working with open-source tooling. The access to high-quality visualization tools, open standards, fast feedback loops, and ease of automation allow students to gain an intuition for how each step within the VLSI flow works. Students also get a chance to write their own "tiny" versions of certain EDA tools (such as STA and DFT) and then integrate them with existing flows, to further supplement their understanding. Additionally, by operating a low-stakes multi-project chip (MPC) tapeout, we're able to provide all students the ability to receive manufactured silicon of their own self-chosen project. We'll discuss the origin of the course, design of lab assignments, structure of the tapeout project, successful student projects, and challenges we've faced through this process.
