Designing specialized hardware is challenging due to high costs, long development cycles, and error risks. Architecture 2.0 aims to address these challenges and democratize hardware design by leveraging open source foundation models, hardware-oriented datasets, and generative AI. This talk explores the challenges and opportunities surrounding Architecture 2.0, discussing the importance of developing and sharing open source hardware-oriented datasets to train and fine-tune foundation models for hardware design tasks. These datasets can include RTL code, netlists, layouts, and performance metrics, enabling the creation of powerful, domain-specific foundation models. However, realizing the full potential of Architecture 2.0 requires collaboration. Cross-disciplinary partnerships in the open source domain will drive the development of open source model architectures, datasets, and tools tailored for hardware design. Adopting open source practices in developing foundation models and datasets will accelerate progress, foster collaboration, and ensure the benefits of this approach are accessible to all. Together, the open source hardware community can work towards realizing Architecture 2.0, empowering designers with open source tools, datasets, and methodologies to create accessible, efficient, and innovative hardware solutions.
