Cohort: Software-Oriented Acceleration for You, Me, and Our Heterogeneous SoCs

Accelerator communication is a hot topic today, and things get especially “interesting” when connecting various accelerators into highly heterogeneous SoCs. A major problem comes from mismatches between non-standard custom accelerator interfaces, differing coherency, addressing and memory alignment requirements that software developers have to fix. Hence, these hinder scaling of core to accelerator and inter-accelerator communication. To solve this problem, we built the Cohort platform that lets developers orchestrate their accelerators in a software oriented manner. In particular, we provide a user-friendly and scalable software API based on high-performance shared memory queues and a hardware wrapper around each accelerator. Our prototype, built on top of OpenPiton, improves over the performance of MMIO and coherent DMA and is accessible open source!
