The wide belt sander is an amazing woodworking tool for the small or big workshop! It can thickness wood in no time at all. It won't create tear out that other machines like planers and jointers will on figured wood. As far as thickness sanders go they are far superior to the Drum Sander. Check out this comparison video:

Some clear advantages of the wide belt sander over the drum sander are the power (they have bigger motors, 5 HP vs 1.5 HP), the speed (their conveyors are twice as fast), their stock removal (they can easily remove up to 1/32 per pass), and as we see in this video THEIR EASE OF CHANGING THE SANDING BELTS (15 seconds vs. several minutes). but the most important advantage they have over the drum sanders is the quality of the sanding that they do. It is so much better that I advise people to not even purchase drum sanders and to save their money for a smaller wide belt sander. They are that superior.
