In this Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition playthrough, we uncover a host of Independence Day and Area 51 Easter eggs, blending classic movie references and alien conspiracies in true Duke Nukem fashion!
Independence Day Homage:

As we near the end of the level, one of the monitors shows a giant flying saucer firing on a city, specifically targeting the Dukeburger building. In a nearby hangar, there’s a shielded flying saucer with a bottle sitting on top, both referencing the alien invasion film Independence Day. To get up close and personal with these, we’ll need to use the DNCLIP code, since it’s impossible to fly over the fence without it. Outside the hangar, we spot a jeep with "3D Realms Prop. Dept. #4330 Jeep" written on the back. The 4330 is a fun reference to the in-game texture used for the jeep, while the whole message nods to a blooper from Independence Day.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Reference:

Outside Area 51, we come across a bus with the license plate "ILUVET," an Easter egg dedicated to Steven Spielberg’s E.T. This playful nod fits well with the overall alien theme of the level.
Groom Lake & Submerged UFO:

As we explore Groom Lake, we find it completely dried-up—an interesting take on the real-life Area 51 location. Beneath the water’s surface lies a UFO, clearly visible and even destructible. This submerged UFO adds an extra layer of mystery and action to the level’s conspiracy theme.
Roswell Conspiracy Box:

In the crate room, there’s a box labeled "Received from Roswell, N.M., 7/2/47, to W.P.A.F.B, OH Hanger 18." This is a reference to the famous Roswell UFO crash of 1947 and the long-standing conspiracy that the wreckage was moved to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, and stored in the mysterious Hangar 18. Duke Nukem 3D suggests that the wreckage has now made its way to Area 51.
Independence Day Interceptor:

In the hangar, we discover another great Easter egg—a small interceptor ship from Independence Day. Finding and entering a secret area allows us to step inside the ship, where we even see the nuclear missile used in the climactic moment of the film. Interestingly, there’s a wine bottle on the ship, an intentional joke since Duke Nukem 3D doesn’t include soda cans.

This level is packed with pop culture references, from alien conspiracy theories to iconic movie moments. Stay tuned for more as we continue to unravel hidden gems in this unforgettable FPS classic!
