THE SEPARATION AND THE TRIAL
Walter Keane, Through his morally reprehensible conduct, which also included forms of gaslighting and bropriating, he inflicted petty psychological violence on his wife, the painter Margaret Keane, fraudulently appropriating her paintings. Ugly, shy, nymphomaniac, crazy, insecure: these are just some of the insults he hurled at her. The manipulation was a perfect success, and Margaret truly ended up feeling weak, tired, and overwhelmed by the insecurities he had subtly instilled in her.
Things changed in the 1970s, when Margaret found the strength to make the right decision: to end the charade by revealing the truth to the entire world, via a radio broadcast.
Thus officially began the long legal battle between the two former Keanes, the central theme of this episode.
Walter is sexist, misogynistic, violent, and addicted to alcohol. Despite this, he boasts charisma and persuasive skills. Some think he's truly a generous benefactor. After all, if no one ever doubted him for fifteen years, why would anyone start to do so now? Even Margaret Keane had played Walter's game until then.
For the press and public opinion, he's the artist.
Margaret will have to overcome even herself and her insecurities, finding courage in her abilities, in her daughter, and in the truth, to face and silence a fearsome and dangerous adversary.
Walter's violence is a consequence of his condition: he's an eternally frustrated loser. He's aware of his worthlessness, of his lack of real artistic talent.
Feeling truly small as a human being, he tried to gain the upper hand over his wife, who was physically and temperamentally weaker. The real tragedy is that he succeeded.
The conditions, after all, were favorable and allowed it. It was also, and above all, the fault of a society that didn't take female artists seriously.
Walter had brainwashed Margaret, undermining her self-esteem, and making her believe he was truly an innovative street painter.
Margaret Keane is now more determined than ever to confront the man who appropriated her work, to settle the score once and for all.
