•When converting fractions to decimals, we would like the denominator to be what number?
•How do you turn tricky fractions, like 3/7, into a decimal (without a calculator)?
Decimals are out of 100. So, when I see .25, I know that is the same as 25/100. Some ASVAB questions are easier to work with, and some are more challenging.
If I see 10/25, for example, I can just multiply the bottom and the top (denominator and numerator) by 4 and get 40/100, and from there I know the answer is .40.
Denominators that you could easily see are 4 (multiply numerator and denominator by 25), 5 (multiply numerator and denominator by 20), 10 (multiply numerator and denominator by 10), and 20 (multiply numerator and denominator by 5). Each of these cases will result in the denominator being 100, which is what we want.
However, sometimes we get fractions that are not quite as simple. What if the number is 3/7? There is the math way and the common sense way. We would like to see that 3/7 is slightly less than half and that 4/7 is slightly more than half. This knowledge will probably eliminate two bad answers. After that do the math.
3/7 = x/100 (cross multiply)
7x = 300
x = .43 (rounded up)
