Born and raised in Kāneʻohe, Hawaiʻi, Justin Pascua is a 2023 graduate of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa's (UH) School of Cinematic Arts (SCA). He has written and directed one feature film project and nine short film projects, four of which won numerous awards including Best Picture, Best Documentary, Best Director, and SCA’s Visionary Filmmaker Scholarship Award within the SCA program. His films also have been accepted into multiple international film festivals, his first documentary film, Homestead, won Best Documentary Short at the Seattle Asian-American Film Festival, a Remi award from WorldFest-Houston’s International Film Festival, and a nomination for Best Made in Hawaiʻi Short at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival.
Justin’s second senior project at SCA, Māka’i, was awarded UH’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Grant of $10,000 while also catching the attention of renowned Paramount television director and SCA board member Larry Teng. Upon viewing the SCA films of 2023, Teng selected Justin to shadow him upon his return to Hawaiʻi to direct an episode of NCIS: Hawaiʻi. Over the course of three weeks, Justin shadowed Teng in the production's entirety while also attending virtual editing sessions.
Justin recently wrapped as a co-editor and camera operator for the feature documentary, Niu Forever, co-produced by Pacific Islanders in Communication (PIC), and is currently working as the 2nd unit director of photographer for the upcoming feature documentary, Sadako’s Gift, directed by Emmy award winning director Freida Mock. While also continuing to do videography, he is in pre-production for his next short film, Huikala, which was an official selection of the 2023 ʻOhina Film Lab. Justin is an aspiring professional film director with the goal of telling visually and emotionally compelling human stories through the universally resonant medium of film to give a different perspective of the world to all audiences. He aims to do so while integrating his own life experience, providing a sense of place through the aesthetics, characters, locations, and subject matter felt in Hawaiʻi; hoping to bring his home and unique perspective of the world to the big screen.
