In this video, we have debunked some nutrition myths that you might have been believing for long, until now! Know the facts and the science behind eating nutritious food.

Myth number 1 - Say NO to sugar if you want to lose weight or if you do not wish to put on more weight. If you have ever thought of embarking on a weight-loss journey, you certainly might have been advised by many to keep sugar at bay. But, what if we tell you that it is absolutely fine to have sugar even when you are trying to lose weight?! The science behind this is pretty straightforward. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate and it is processed from a natural plant source, that is sugarcane. Now, like any other processed food, sugar is not very nutritionally beneficial. But, if you include it within your daily recommended intake of carbohydrates, it is absolutely fine to consume even during your weight-loss journey.

Myth Number 2 - You should cut carbs to lose weight. While there are several other myths regarding carbs or carbohydrates, this is the most common one. Yes, one may say that carbohydrates are not required for survival but, it is important to note that they are the main source of energy. Now, if you cut down on your carbs, you may experience low energy and fatigue. Moreover, this may not even be sustainable for the lifetime. If a person doesn’t have control over the quantity of carbs being eaten, a strategic way can be adopted to limit them. Remember, in order to lose weight, one has to keep a check on their overall calorie intake and maintain a deficit. So, carbohydrates do not have to be avoided for fat loss. (Astrup, A. V. (2017))

Myth Number 3 - Potatoes make you fat. How many times have you heard someone say - Stop eating potatoes or you’ll turn into a potato? Lost count, haven’t you? This is a myth believed to be true by many. If you believed this too and thought of letting go of your favorite food item, then breathe a sigh of relief as you can continue having them even during weight loss. Potatoes are nutrient-dense complex carbohydrates and are a good source of energy. Besides, they are also rich in vitamin B6, potassium, and vitamin C. As long as you adjust your potatoes in your daily recommended carbohydrate intake, you can include potatoes in your diet.

Myth Number 4 - Lemon and honey in warm water miraculously burn away your fat. Well, this drink may taste great and might even be beneficial in some form; but it is unwise to think that it helps burn fat. Lemon is a citrus fruit, rich in vitamin C. Honey has a wide range of nutrients that can help boost immunity. Although these two ingredients of the drink possess benefits, it is a myth that drinking them with warm water or even having them individually can help in weight loss. You may find a few research studies cited to support this, but these are studies on hydration and weight loss. A study observed that participants with increased water intake consumed fewer calories. So, we can safely say that the mixture of honey, lemon, and warm water does not offer any additional benefit than just plain water when it comes to weight loss. (Tammy Chang et al, 2009-2012)

Myth number 5 - Vegetable and fruit juices are great to detoxify your body. This is a marketing gimmick that many picked looking at people’s inclination towards eating or drinking “healthy”. Vegetables and fruits are rich in micronutrients and offer a good amount of fiber. So, it is recommended to have them as they are rather than having their juice. Furthermore, the process of detoxification is carried out naturally by the body with the help of a complex system, including organs like the liver, kidney, and digestive tract. So, it is absolutely not necessary to have any so-called detox drinks as they won’t provide any additional help in detoxifying the body.
