How Does Art Teach Showing vs Telling in Writing?
Why does some writing feel real and genuine, while some does not? I think the answer can be explained in-part by examining art.
When I was 13 in seventh grade I wanted to learn how to draw. Unfortunately, I sucked, and nothing I did helped. That is until I bought The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards.
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain explores why some people can draw, and others cannot, and how those who struggle can better themselves.
To put it simply, there are two camps:
1. Those who cannot draw what they see, and instead draw crude symbols to represent what they are trying to depict.
2. Those who can draw what they see, and thus can portray reality.
The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain teaches the reader to be able to draw what they see, in other words to graduate from portraying the world through symbols and instead portray reality.
Similarly, I think writers want to be able to portray reality, rather being stuck using weak language which acts as flimsy symbols for what you’re trying to depict in your writing. And therein lies show versus tell.
