Canada Sponsored Russian Propagandist Documentary
Canada sponsored a documentary made by a Russian director who had previously worked on documentaries for Russia Today. The film, titled Russians at War, presents the Russian perspective on the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but, unsurprisingly, it turned out to be Russian propaganda.
According to Darya Bassel, who watched the film, this "perspective" is detached from reality: "The filmmaker claims that her country hasn't participated in wars for many years, and that she has only read about wars in books. Thus, the war in 2022 came as a complete shock to her."
The film was screened at the Venice Film Festival and is scheduled to be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. TVO, the organization that initially sponsored the movie, has since withdrawn its support, but the Toronto Film Festival has chosen to proceed with the screening, citing "freedom of speech."
