It involves the use of sound waves, typically at frequencies between 1 and 3 MHz, which are transmitted into the body through a handheld transducer. These sound waves create microscopic vibrations in the soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which can produce heat and promote increased blood flow to the area, aiding in the healing process.

Therapeutic ultrasound is typically used for the following purposes:

1. **Pain Relief**: The thermal effect of ultrasound can help reduce pain by increasing blood flow and relaxing muscle spasms.

2. **Tissue Healing**: The mechanical effect of ultrasound can stimulate cell activity, which can accelerate the healing of soft tissue injuries like sprains, strains, and tendonitis.

3. **Scar Tissue Breakdown**: Ultrasound may help break down scar tissue, improving mobility and reducing discomfort in areas where scar tissue has formed.

4. **Increased Circulation**: The treatment can enhance blood flow to the targeted area, which supports the body's natural healing processes.

5. **Reduction of Swelling and Inflammation**: Ultrasound can be used to decrease inflammation and edema (swelling) in the tissues.

The treatment is generally painless and lasts anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes per session, depending on the area being treated and the specific condition. It is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy, such as exercise or manual therapy, to achieve optimal results.

While therapeutic ultrasound is widely used, it should be applied by a trained professional, as improper use can potentially cause burns or other tissue damage. Additionally, it is not recommended for use over certain areas of the body, such as over the eyes, heart, or reproductive organs, or in individuals with certain conditions like cancer or a pacemaker.
