Most air-cooled VW engines have an engine number stamped on the case. That number can help you identify what engine you have, and sometimes what model it was originally built for.

In this video, we’ll walk through:

Where to find your VW engine number
The early prefix years (1- for Beetle, 20- for Bus)
Shared sequences from 1956–1965
Letter prefixes from 1965 onwards (D, F, H, AE, AD, AH, AS, and more)
Type 3 and Type 4 engine codes you might come across

These codes are a great way to uncover your engine’s story — but remember, after 50 years of rebuilds and swaps, what’s inside may not match the number on the case.

👉 In the next video, we’ll cover the tell-tale signs your engine might be bigger than stock — without even opening it up:    • Is Your VW Engine Bigger Than Stock? | How...

🔧 Drop your engine code in the comments if it’s not listed, and I’ll add it to the downloadable reference we’re building together.
