What Do We Already Know?
In times of great uncertainty and lack of clarity, our brains are wired for concrete action steps and simple, usable plans. What doesn't work? Adding more uncertainty to our brains (which are already on overload). What does work? Reflecting on the simple question: What Do We Already Know? about whatever problem we are trying to solve. The magic of drawing about previous knowledge is that this isn't an adult-learning strategy; this is a LEARNING strategy for all. How do we help our students grow in their learning? Begin by asking them to share what they already know. How do we empower our teachers to own their next steps? Begin by asking them, "What do we know WORKS?" Drawing upon the experiences and knowledge we already possess saves time, energy, and brain power. And, it strengths our efficacy to believe we can, in fact, solve the problems we face.
