Arn Chorn-Pond, a former child soldier during the Khmer Rouge, survived genocide through music. Similarly, the heavy metal band Doch Chkae, who grew up scavenging in a Phnom Penh dump, found purpose and hope through music in a country scarred by poverty and underdevelopment after the Khmer Rouge. Despite some recovery, Cambodia remains impoverished, but for those born there, music has offered an escape from crime and violence.
