We're continuing the series on how to have a productive performance conversation when there is a performance issue - our people are not, in some way, meeting the performance standards, and we need to help them turn their work around.

In last week's video -    • Addressing a Performance Issue part 1...   - we defined a performance issue with examples. That's the starting place: before you call someone into your office, make sure that the results you see or the behaviors they exhibit fail to meet a clear, mutually-known-and-understood standard that you can articulate.

Assuming that to be the case, you have one more task before you begin that performance conversation: word the performance issue precisely. If you word it incorrectly, you'll start the performance conversation down an unproductive path and will have a difficult time recovering; word it right, and the conversation is (almost) easy.

We'll get to the performance conversation itself in the next few videos, but for today, we're going to focus on framing the issue appropriately.
