Murray Lake in Winter
This short video features a walk from my home down to Murray Lake in Lowell, Michigan near the end of Winter. The lake was quite frozen and I took a walk out on the ice. It was a bright and sunny day but the temperature had only reached 18 degrees. I very much enjoyed the adventure and plan to make more videos down at the lake very soon.
This is the first real video created entirely by me. Everything was captured on a Samsung Note Edge smartphone and rendered on a PC using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13.0.
Much was learned about the process of video production while working on this very small and completely experimental project. The lessons learned have already been applied to the "filming" session that followed the one captured here.
The three most pertinent lessons were; 1) shave unless really growing a beard, 2) trim nose hairs even if growing a beard, and 3) try to avoid pointing camera up nose.
My next video shoot adopted those three basic requirements and I'm much happier with the amount of usable footage that resulted. I also discovered that my smartphone can capture 4K video, so I'm looking forward to exploring what can be done with that footage.
I've also discovered that image stabilization can be an issue and when YouTube renders the uploaded file to conform with their storage and streaming requirements, some of the stability issues can be amplified. Also, the YouTube rendering tends to lower the overall video quality so that it can keep the streaming bit rates down. Other YouTube producers have overcome these issues and I will strive to learn from them.
Video production is very new to me and I'm sure that my skills will improve with practice and I hope that my videos will become more interesting over time.
