Summer Workshop | History | Environmental History and Visual Archives
This is a recorded version of the workshop held on 2nd May for high school students. The session had two segments-
1. Earth first! Why do environmental history? | Ayushi Dhawan
--Did you know that 79,000 tonnes of plastic waste float in the Great Pacific Patch? A vast pile of discarded clothes in Chile’s Atacama desert is so big that it is visible from space. A 2019 report by Niti Ayog predicts that 21 major cities in India will run out of groundwater by 2030. Have you ever wondered how we got here? In this session, we will see how our present-day environmental concerns are rooted in the past and how the mutual relationship between humans and nature has changed over time.

2. Stone, paper, and light: Exploring environmental history through visual archives | Ajay Salunkhe
--Can a cave painting speak about a silent era of humanity’s past? Could the discovery of a pigment jeopardise an ancient civilisation? Can a photograph raise an alarm about the impact of human actions on Earth?
Delve into these intriguing questions and more as we explore the potential of images to unravel the mysteries of human-nature relations from prehistory to the present. Join us to discover how the study of visual culture and art history has emerged as a vital tool for historical research.
