Aficionados of Louisa May Alcott's Little Ladies will recollect that her courageous woman Jo composed suggestive books prior to turning her hand to more "serious" writing. Alcott, composing under the nom de plume. M. Barnard, frequently did likewise, and Behind a Cover (1866) is one of her sensation books. It centers around Jean Muir, who enters the home of the rich Coventry family as a tutor to their sixteen-year-old little girl. Yet, is the flabbergasting Miss Muir all that she is by all accounts?
